MINERALS

TOPICS TO BE COVERED What are minerals? Types of minerals Uses of minerals

WHAT ARE MINERALS? Minerals are inorganic substances that are formed naturally over millions of years. They are not formed from living things but are formed as a result of natural processes that occur in the earth. Minerals on the surface - sand, every type of rock. Minerals below - iron, copper, tin etc.

TYPES OF MINERALS Metallic Minerals copper iron lead aluminium Metallic minerals are often found as mineral ores Non Metallic Minerals quartz calcite halite ruby diamond Some are rock forming minerals

MINERAL ORE Mineral ore is a mineral deposit mixed with rocks; and it contains enough of a metal to permit it to be extracted and sold at a profit.

USES OF MINERALS Raw material in industries (iron) Diamonds, hardest mineral can be used for various industrial purposes (drill bits, coating for razor blades, dental drills, surgical scalpels) Building materials (clay, stone) Jewellery (gold, silver, sapphire, topaz)
