Let’s refresh our memories

Language of the Discipline Force- a push or pull Friction- a force that keeps objects that are touching each other from sliding past each other easily Motion- any change of position

Rules: We need to apply force to objects for them to move. The amount of force determines the distance the object will travel. The mass of the objects also affects the amount of force applied. Friction will act against the movement of the object.

Will the ball roll faster on the tile floor or the area rug?

You’re Hired! All of you have just been hired as engineers by a car company! Your objective is to construct a sail car called a Puff Mobile that is powered by:

How can we use the force of the wind to move our Puff Mobile? Materials you will use: Straws Lifesavers Pins Paper

Objects that use wind as a force Wind Turbine Dandelion Seeds Ships

What characteristics do these wind powered objects have in common? Hot Air Balloon Kite Surfing Hang Gliding

Teams Gather your supplies and get to work! You have 15 minutes to begin designing your car! Teams may use:  Straws  Paper  Paper clips  Life savers  Tape  foil They must build their Puff Mobiles using these materials!

Unanswered Questions Can you explain how the wind acted as a force in this activity Can you predict the outcome if we used an electric powered fan as applied force instead of just one breath in this activity? Based on what you know, can you determine if carpet would cause the Puff Mobile to travel differently? In your opinion, do you think Puff Mobiles would be an effective mode of transportation in this city? What type of modifications would you make to make the Puff Mobile more effective?
