7-8 November 2006 Belgrade, Serbia Extension of the EEA European Topic Centre’s Work Program to the West Balkan Countries in the field of water 1 EIONET-Water Priority data set on lake quality Expectations, methodology Delivered data Gaps

7-8 November 2006 Belgrade, Serbia Extension of the EEA European Topic Centre’s Work Program to the West Balkan Countries in the field of water 2 To provide timely, relevant, reliable and representative data to the European Environment Agency in order to prepare annually updated information on European trends for the European decision makers. OBJECTIVE

7-8 November 2006 Belgrade, Serbia Extension of the EEA European Topic Centre’s Work Program to the West Balkan Countries in the field of water 3 SELECTION OF LAKE STATIONS Main rules: At least 1 station per 1750 km 2 The selected stations should be geographically spread across the country, and be representative for the country. Small, medium, large and small km2 surface area very large lakes should be medium 1-10 km2 surface area included. large km2 surface area very large >100 km2 surface area Both reference, representative and impact stations should be selected.

7-8 November 2006 Belgrade, Serbia Extension of the EEA European Topic Centre’s Work Program to the West Balkan Countries in the field of water 4 STATIONS TYPES Reference stations (if possible, around 10% of all stations): little or no human activity >90% natural landscape Representative stations: to reflect the general quality of lakes quality is influenced by diffuse and/or point sources of pollution from upstream activitites pollutants from point sources are fully mixed and diluted within the ambient water Impact stations: located within the zone, where initial mixing of discharges takes place concentrations maybe worste case

7-8 November 2006 Belgrade, Serbia Extension of the EEA European Topic Centre’s Work Program to the West Balkan Countries in the field of water 10 HOW TO EARN MORE SMILIES -> At least 2 out of the following criteria are met: 1. More than 75% of sites identified and described, OR 2. Delivery of hazardous substances data, OR 1. Timely data delivery to national repository, and 2. Data delivered in the requested format, OR long time series (more than 10 years) for phosphorus, nitrogen and oxygen available. Delayed data delivery under Eionet-Water data collection (i.e. after the delivery deadline). OR Timely delivery, but delivered data are not fulfilling basic quality criteria. No data delivery under Eionet-Water data collection.
