Positive vs. Negative Deviance Positive Deviance is over- conformity to norms –anorexia, perfectionism, Mother Theresa Negative Deviance is rejection, misinterpretation, or unawareness of norms –Obesity, gangs, drug addicts, prostitutes, civil rights movement

Social Control Ways to encourage conformity to social norms –Internal social control: self control- when you choose to conform b/c you feel it is the right thing to do –External social control: sanctions (rewards and punishments) to encourage conformity to norms Formal: prison, iss, oss, red bricks Informal: gossip, ridicule, smiles
