Characterization The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Done in two ways: 1.Direct : directly tells what the character is like. 2.Indirect: shows things that reveal personality.

Speech What a character says How a character says something “…whenever I saw the hunters with their long spears skimming over the waters, I was angry, for these animals were my friends. It was fun to see them playing or sunning themselves among the kelp. It was more fun than the thought of beads to wear around my neck.”
Thoughts/Feelings Thoughts – What a character thinks – How a character thinks Feelings – Emotions the character may feel toward another character, memory, or event
Effects on others The character’s effect on other people How other characters feel or behave toward the character Other character’s thoughts and feeling about the character Interaction with other characters
Actions What a character does physically How the character behaves
Looks What a character looks like such as their hair color, clothes, height, etc.
Goals What a character wants to accomplish
