Aim during gymnastics… To improve our performance by developing our understanding of skills and techniques: What are skills and techniques. How to gather data on them. How to break a skill down. Different ways to learn skills. The importance of feedback when learning skills. The stages of skill learning.
What exactly are skills and techniques? A skill describes the purpose of linked sequences of movement. An example of a skill is shooting in basketball. Technique describes the ways of completing a skill. In basketball, shooting is a skill. Lay-up, set shot, jump shot and slam dunk are techniques for shooting.
Complete the table below... ActivitySkillTechniques
Look at the following skills and decide whether you think they are simple or complex...
FORWARD ROLL
OVERHEAD KICK
Snowboard Back flip
Rugby Pass
Table Tennis Serve
Volleyball Spike
Why were some simple and some complex?
Why were some easy and some complex? Simple and complex skills often have many of the features outlined below Simple SkillComplex Skills Few subroutinesMany subroutines Physically undemandingPhysically demanding Little coordination neededCoordination vital Simple order of movementsComplicated order of movements Only on movement at a timeMany movements at the same time Few judgements to be madeMany judgements to be made Easy environment (e.g. good weather conditions, no opposition, safety equipment) Difficult environment (e.g. poor weather conditions, full opposition, no safety equipment)
But what are subroutines? Subroutines are the small parts (movements) that make up a skill. Simple SkillComplex Skills Few subroutinesMany subroutines
Cycle of Analysis Investigate: Gather Data Analyse: Work out Strengths and weaknesses Develop: Practice Evaluate: Have you improved? Cycle of Analysis
How did we gather general data on our performance?
Gathering general data on your performance? We gathered general data by completing a skills checklist. Our partner watched us perform various flight, balance, rotational and inversion skills. We performed each skill 5 times. After our 5 th attempt our partner ticked whether we showed: 1.limited control and fluency 2.sometimes showed control and fluency 3.showed good control and fluency 4.consistently showed a high degree of control and fluency
Why was the data gathering method appropriate? Identified our strengths and weaknesses. Observation schedule provided us with a permanent record we could look back upon after practising. Performing each skill 5 times meant we got an accurate picture of our ability.
How can we make skill analysis more simple? One way of analysing a skill is to break it down into smaller parts which contain fewer subroutines. By doing this we can easily see which parts of the skill are being performed correctly and which parts need to be developed
All skills can be broken down into 3 main areas PREPARATION ACTION RECOVERY A good way to remember this is PAR.
Describe a skill that was a strength. (3) Preparation.... Action.... Recovery...
Describe a skill that was a weakness. (3) Preparation... Action... Recovery...
