Covering Your Assets Personal preparedness for when things go wrong.

Introduction Chas Walts Emergency Management Consultant Business Continuity Consultant Former Business Owner Married with Children Boy Scout Prepper Currently working for Alexander Open Systems (AOS)

Being prepared when things go wrong. Discussion Topics What can go wrong Prepare and Plan Protect your family Protect yourself Protect your livelihood

Who turned the lights out? We are in an age of technology We are dependent on that technology. We have been assimilated. If you don’t think so - try taking your daughters cell phone from her and watch what happens. We are so dependent on technology we are now backing up our data systems with data systems. Our dependencies are backed up to other dependencies.

…chances are they are actually texting each other.

So…today we need to think about life without technology.

Because when things go wrong… Houses get destroyed Your house can be threatened Regional threat Regional destruction Job location destroyed Technology destroyed

The scary part… Aside from destruction… No water No electricity No phone service...WHAT!!!

First things first! If your family is safe you will go back to work. If you are safe and healthy you are an asset to your organization. If you are prepared you are a REAL asset to your organization.

Easy planning mantra Who to call Where to go Who does what and when

Family Preparedness 1. Play the “What if game” 2. Establish where to go if you can’t go home 1. Stay at school 2. Rally location at a neighbor or family member 3. Where to meet / out of town 3. Write it down in a plan 4. What will you need - Go Bag – prepare them 5. Don’t forget the dog and his needs Some Counties in Florida set up special shelters for Fire and Police families only during a Hurricane.

Traditional Bug-Out Bag The traditional bug out bag is designed for emergencies and will include essential that are needed including first aid, food and water, fire making gear, para cord, gloves, masks and basic survival gear.

My Emergency Go Bag Flashlight Manual radio Batteries Pocket knife Paper, Pens, Tape Family Communications Plan Credit Cards, Cash Copies of Documents (Passport, Insurance, important account numbers) Spare Cell Phone, with charger Flash drive with data Bottled water Protein bars Matches Prescription medications (copies of prescription) First Aid Kit Blanket Sturdy shoes Change of clothes Poncho Extra glasses Personal hygiene items (soap, wipes, tooth brush, etc.)

Where is it kept? Where ever you can get to it. Trunk of car Office Offsite storage …not at home

Now that the family is safe…my biggest asset!

Part 2- Business Continuity

SPLITTING THE LINE Business survival Your ability Your tools Personal survival Comfort Items needed to maintain your business survivability Support tools

Basics of a Business Continuity Plan 1. Having a place to relocate to. Where are your organization’s other locations. 2. What are you departments critical functions to the organization? Mission Critical Functions 3. How fast do those mission critical functions need to be back online before the organization is impacted? Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) 4. What do I need to get the functions back online?

Your Business Continuity Plan Will have: A Plan: New Automated BCP Planning Software Communications Plan: Automated call system Inoperable Communications Plan: Rally Points Disaster Recovery Strategy: Back-up Data Center / Cloud Defined Mission Critical Functions Recovery Timeline Objectives Succession and Delegation of Authority Alternate Locations Plan Vendor lists: on the W Drive Client Lists: on the W Drive Personnel Lists: on the W Drive What do all of these have in common?

Murphy was an Optimist The GOOD We have a Plan We have aconsolidated phonelist of ourpersonnel, clients, and vendors Our data is safelybacked up to theCloud The BADNo BuildingNo Data CenterNo PhonesNo Communications The UGLYAll of our plans andcontact lists are onthe W DriveWe sold off all of ourcarrier pigeons lastweek

Ask yourself- how valuable are you to the organization? What tools do you need to to your job. How many of tools are electronic or stored data? Does your company have a Business Continuity Plan? Are you familiar with it? In the case of a Business Disruption…Do you know: Where to go? Who to call? Who does what and when?

Introducing the Go Bag Officers in the military sometimes kept bags on the back of their office door. These bags contained: Forms Phone Lists Critical Plans Paper and pens …tools they needed to do their job. Military Soldiers have a bag staged with everything they need to survive in the field.

Concept… My Business Go Bag What’s in it? Retired Cell Phone w/ power cord Retired laptop (maintain updates) w/ power cord Flash drive with cell phone back-up Paper copies of critical forms, plans, references Phone Lists Vendor Lists Client Lists Business Continuity Plan Flash drive with all documents listed above. Extra pair of glasses Legal pads Pencils and Pens Tape (Scotch, Duct) Dry Erase Markers I keep mine is a box…

Your Secret You have in your possession… shhh... paper!

Disclaimer No documents should be backed-up nor taken off campus without the express permission of your supervisor. All “Sensitive” document rules and handling requirements apply.

Your Key The key is to be able to stand-up critical functions and communicate to clients, vendors and the like. Expect to have to function 24 to 72 hours (maybe longer) without systems. Have the tools to get things stated.

Now let’s just ponder this… …I think my assets might just be seeing some shade.

Knowing what we know Protect the family You need a plan Protect the business They need a plan You are the Boy Scout? are you prepared?
