Media Journal What are the four aesthetic elements we will be examining in our study of applied media aesthetics? Describe at least three ways that sound can be used and manipulated to create viewer impact.

Sound Broadcast and Video Production I

Sound Sound is an integral part of television and film. In the very early days of television, sound and pictures were recorded, processed, and broadcasted simultaneously. There was no opportunity or equipment to adjust the sound quality or add additional sound elements. Today we have sophisticated equipment that can be used to enhance productions by adjusting audio levels, adding sound effects, and adding music or background sounds.

Three Functions of Sound Information Outer orientation Inner orientation

Information Function Purpose is to communicate specific information verbally. In television, we most often see this function through: dialogue between characters direct address to the viewers by a performer (State of the Union Address by the President, celebrity endorsing a product) narration (documentaries, news packages).

Outer Orientation Specific sounds can help us reveal and define the location of an event and characteristics of the environment In a close-up shot of a woman with outdoor sounds such as birds singing, a rustling brook, and barking dogs, we may assume that she is in the country The echoing of a large empty warehouse compared to the close confines of a busy restaurant.

Outer Orientation Sounds can also help establish the time. Typical morning sounds are the alarm clock, water running in the shower, and breakfast being cooked in the kitchen. An evening or night in the country has cricket sounds, trees blowing in the wind, and owls.

Outer Orientation Sound can describe a specific situation. Dogs barking madly outside might indicate that someone is on the property. Sound can be used to predict or signal an upcoming situational change. Music changing from a happy tune to an ominous mood.

Inner Orientation Music is one of the most direct ways of establishing a certain mood. It can make us laugh, cry, feel happy or sad. We can use a variety of sounds to go with our camera shots to show a person who feels calm, excited, or agitated. Sound effects can also be used to increase the energy of a scene.

Professional Example The addition of sound to a production is a very interesting process that takes careful planning and a team of individuals. View “The Sound of Miracle” Behind the Scenes Featurette“The Sound of Miracle”

Reflection In your notes, reflect on the featurette. What stands out to you? What do you remember? What was surprising? What was interesting?
