Did you know? Did you know that da Vinci designed a purse?

What is it supposed to do? In addition to designing weapons, flying machines, and other fantastic creations, da Vinci also created accessories. He did this because he wasn’t a fan of modern 16th century styles of dress. The decorative bag was designed to be carried by a man to hold his small possessions.

What did it look like? da Vinci’s love of function and beauty is reflected in this beautiful design. This is a smaller bag, with ornate design of swirls, circles, flowers, and plant-life. The designs on this bag reflects da Vinci’s observation and desire to imitate nature, which is something that he was famous for, you can also see his love of observation in his flying machines because he watched birds to imitate their flight. The design includes a functional and decorative clasp that was unique to the 16th century.

Was it ever tested? Was it successful? The bag was created in 2012 by Gherardini (an Italian handbag maker) out of refined leather and brass. Only 99 of the purses were created. Each was hand sewn, and the handle hand etched. This handmade bag was crafted in a way that would have also been possible during da Vinci’s time period.

Can you take a guess as to what materials da Vinci wanted to use to make this invention? da Vinci would have used: Leather Embossing tools Brass (metal working skills) Cutting tools Knowledge of measurement Sewing tools (needles, thread)
