Learn How To Read a Ruler in Just a Few Steps

ONE FOOT = 12 INCHES As you can see there are 12 inches in one foot ~As a side note, there are 3 feet in 1 yard Not drawn to scale

ONE INCH = TWO ½ INCHES If you can see, the inch is split up into 2 parts and each part is a ½ inch. Also, the ½ inch mark is the longest line ½” + ½” = 1”

¼ INCH ~There are four ¼ inches in one inch ~There are two ¼ inches in a ½ inch, making the ¼ inch mark half way between 0 and ½ ~The ¼ inch lines are the second longest

1/8 INCH ~There are eight 1/8 inches in one inch ~There are two 1/8 inches in a ¼ inch, making the 1/8” line half way between 0 and ¼ inch ~The 1/8 inch line is the third longest line

1/16 INCH ~The smallest lines on a ruler or tape measure is 1/16 inch ~There are eight 1/16 inches (or 8/16) in ½ inch ~Each line on a ruler is a 1/16 inch line, but simplifying the lines into smaller fractions make it easier

CONCLUSION ~After reviewing all of the slides, keep the Power Point open and keep on reviewing back to it ~Each standard ruler and tape measures are divided up into feet and inches, and the inches are divided up into ½”, ¼”. 1/8”, and 1/16” ~Reading a ruler will eventually become like second nature after doing it for a while. Using the slides that I have provided will make it easy for you to measure with a ruler or tape measure. Soon enough you will be able to read 5’ 5/8” in no time.
