SPEED TABLES FOR CORONADO ROAD BETWEEN 7 TH STREET AND 10 TH STREEET

. The City needs a study location. This location is only one block long and would be easy to implement a complete plan for study. Both cut through and speed. Existing funding allocated for mitigation on Coronado Road through: Coronado Fight back South West Why this section of Coronado Road?

One block north of McDowell Road, Coronado connects 7th street to McDowell road, making it the “cut through” choice for avoiding the right turn north from McDowell, and the left turn east on McDowell from 7th Street.

7 th Street from 4-6 PM has restricted left turn lanes going south. McDowell is the first major intersection from Northern that left turns are permitted during those times. The back up is to Palm Lane or farther, when the light at McDowell holds the traffic back, the left turn cut through to the east on the residential streets is amazing, and everyone is full throttle as they have just made that cherished left…….

McDowell has two lanes traveling west at 7th Street, with a pedestrian at 7th Street restricting the right turn, McDowell becomes one lane west. Summit high School, shopping areas, and eating establishments make that intersection pedestrian heavy all times during the day

Several parking lots from medical buildings on the north side of McDowell empty onto 10th Street north of McDowell with the exit of “choice” being to use Coronado to connect to 7th Street.

In the mornings it is easier for the those parking at the medical centers and Banner to “left it” at Coronado, and proceed to 10th rather than do the left light at the intersection and then do the left at 10th street.

Banner Medical Center empties it’s traffic onto 10th Street south of McDowell, and with a light at McDowell the connection of choice to 7th Street is Coronado.

At the Traffic Calming Web site which was developed by the Institute of Transportation Engineers with financial support from the Federal Highway Administration in the interest of information exchange. You can see that their description of a speed hump shows a 19mph crossing and a 18% volume reduction. The description of a speed table defines these speeds as MPH and a 12% reduction in volume. Both reductions in volume are dependent on the availability of alternate routes. It makes complete sense that each situation is different and calls for different solutions and options. This is the importance of having the options available, to actually achieve the most satisfactory results. In the case of Coronado Road the installation of humps would slow traffic to a rate well below the acceptable speed limit, and that additional un-necessary reduction would not “pay-off” when considering the diversion to neighboring streets, causing yet additional mitigation and added expense. The proper application of tables would achieve the necessary and desirable reduction in the speeds. Most of the cut-through volume is repeat individuals, the tables would provide tolerable access to the road without causing a adverse effect of the other streets. At a cost savings of additional mitigation.

It is located within the Coronado Historic District. The streetscapes should be subject to the same guideline standards as the homes in the area. More information at: Contact:
