Rigorous Programs of Study in the Context of State and Federal Initiatives 1

POS/S-A POS/RPOS 2 Programs of Study State-approved Programs of Study RPOS Programs of Study – As a guidance tool, the intent is to chart out many paths for student success. State-approved Programs of Study – Signature programs for a consortium. Each consortium should identify at least seven programs for state approval. Rigorous Programs of Study – Ten elements take the POS to the highest standard. Each consortium should bring at least one Program of Study to meet the RPOS standard during the year.

RPOS and State Initiatives 3 RPOS Redesign Career Pathways Voluntary Public School Choice Career Guidance/ Partner- ships Redesign – Planning among the Commissioner of Education, Chancellor of MnSCU and Director of the Office of Higher Education to enhance opportunities for high school students to successfully enter and complete postsecondary education. Career Pathways – Improved alignment between CTE Programs of Study and Career Pathways initiatives of the WorkForce Center System to promote more common understanding and improved transitions from education to employment. Improved Career Guidance through Partnerships – Expansion of work conducted with the National Research Center for Career Technical Education to focus on career guidance in schools utilizing CTE and academic teachers, postsecondary faculty, and community partners. Voluntary Public School Choice – Planning grants to promote opportunities for high school students to gain postsecondary credit while in high school. Promoted examples include early college models, AP/IB, the Anoka-Hennepin STEP Program, and CTE Programs of Study.

Redesigning the transition from Secondary to Postsecondary Education. Commissioner Brenda Cassellius, Chancellor Steven Rosenstone, MOHE Director Larry Pogemiller align high school assessment with measures of readiness for post-secondary education; provide targeted support while students are in high school if students are not on track to being ready for post-secondary education; increase opportunities for high school students to earn post- secondary credits earlier when they are ready for post-secondary education; better align students’ educational plans with workforce needs. 4
