Training Techniques: Finding Your Inner Trainer 5 Principles of Adult Learning Presented By: Kristin Durham, California Department of Child Support Services

5 Principles of Adult Learning 1.They understand why something is important to know or do. 2.They have the freedom to learn in their own way. 3.Learning is experiential. 4.The time is right for them to learn. 5.The process is positive and encouraging.

1. They Understand Why Something is Important to Know or Do Make Sure Your Adult Students Understand “Why” –Adults require a WIIFM – What’s In It For Me? –Adults learn when they see a need and are ready to learn.

2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way Adults learn in all styles. The best approach is to accommodate all learning styles. –Visual Learners –Auditory Learners –Kinesthetic Learners

Visual Learners –Learn best from written material or visual Aids. –“Show me,” is their motto. –Often sit in the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions and to watch you, the teacher. –They want to know what the subject looks like. 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

Visual Learners –Best Training Methods Demonstrations Video PowerPoint Graphs Charts Illustrations 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

Auditory Learners –Listen carefully to all sounds associated with the learning. –“Tell me,” is their motto. –They will pay close attention to the sound of your voice and all of its subtle messages, –They will actively participate in discussions. 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

Auditory Learners –Best Training Methods Lectures Discussion groups Brain-storming Group interaction 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

Kinesthetic Learners –Need to physically do something to understand it. –Their motto is “Let me do it.” –They trust their feelings and emotions about what they’re learning and how you’re teaching it. –They want to actually touch what they’re learning. –They are the ones who will get up and help you with role playing. 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

Kinesthetic Learners –Best Training Methods Hands-on the keyboard Colored markers for note-taking Whiteboard Exercises Scented markers with a link to a topic 2. They Have the Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way

3. Learning is Experiential Allow Your Students to Experience What They’re Learning –Activities that get students involved –Life experiences brought to the classroom

3. Learning is Experiential Activities that get students involved –Small group discussions –Experiments –Role playing/skits –Building something at their table or desk

3. Learning is Experiential Life experiences brought to the classroom –Tap into that wealth of wisdom whenever it’s appropriate

4. The Time is Right For Them to Learn When the Student Is Ready, the Teacher Appears –If the student isn’t ready to learn, chances are good he or she won’t –Adults are in the classroom because they want to be. They’ve already determined the time is right.

5. The Process is Positive and Encouraging Encourage Your Adult Students –Your students are adults. Speaking to them in the tone of voice you might use with a child is offensive. –Genuine encouragement from one person to another, regardless of age, is a wonderful point of human interaction.
