Work Problems Objective: To solve work problems involving rational expressions.

Use this formula:

Work Notes Paper Let’s do the 2 problems on your notes paper together.

Problem 1(on notes paper) It would take Nora 3 h to chop down a tree in front of her house. Her younger brother would need 6 h to do the same job. How much time would it take them if they worked together?

Problem 2 3) Working alone, Danielle can sweep a porch in 13 minutes. Gariella can sweep the same porch in 15 minutes. Find how long it would take them if they worked together.

Problem 3 4) It takes Kali 12 minutes to sweep a porch. James can sweep the same porch in 13 minutes. Find how long it would take them if they worked together.

Problem 4 5) It takes Daniel 15 hours to pick forty bushels of apples. Shawna can pick the same amount in 11 hours. If they worked together, how long would it take them?

Problem 5 (on notes paper) Working alone, Sean can cultivate a field in 6 h. If his brother Ian helps him, it will only take 3.5 h to cultivate the field. How long will it take Ian to do the job alone?

Example 6 Working together, Michelle and Dana can pick forty bushels of apples in 7 hours. Had she done it alone it would have taken Michelle 15 hours. Find how long it would take Dana to do it alone.

Problem 7 Working together, Erica and Tracy can tar a roof in 5 hours. Had she done it alone, it would have taken Erica 11 hours. How long would it take Tracy to do it alone?

Problem 8 Working together, Serene and Summer can plant flowers in 6 minutes. Had she done it alone it would have taken Summer 10 minutes. Find how long it would take Serene to do it alone?
