Mentor Foundation UK Founded in 1998 Part of Charities affiliated with Mentor International Foundation Share knowledge and best practice around drug education and prevention A life-course approach to evidence-based prevention We support evidence-based prevention in the home, at school and in the community, considering the many inter-related risks young people face. Background

ADEPIS drug education review (survey of 288 schools in England):(survey of 288 schools in England) Lack of centralised guidance for drug and alcohol education, specifically around best practice. Lack of curriculum time to build continuous learning, gaps in finance for resources and staff training, and lack of confidence among non-specialist teachers. Respondents (81% ) asked for more classroom resources for drug and alcohol education. Continuous assessment via: Open consultations Targeted discussions at regional seminars Working groups organised with key Local Authorities (e.g. Bexley, Brighton & Hove, Leeds) Mentor-ADEPIS response: Development of quality standards for drug educationquality standards Responsive development of briefing papersbriefing papers Inclusion of teacher training in the ADEPIS offer Assessing Teachers’ Needs and Developing Appropriate Training Resources and Methods

Future Plans for Teacher Training Training needs for teachers of PSHE has been identified as an area of weakness in recent years by Mentor, Ofsted, PSHE Association and the Commons Education Select Committee. Current challenges to school staff attending drug education CPD: Non-statutory status of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education (environment) Inability to receive school release time Lack of funding for attendance Mentor-ADEPIS strategy: Webinar training sessions Online CPD modules to be accessed from the Mentor-ADEPIS website Quality assured training material to be used for additional training Online Q&A session and feedback form Face-to-face ‘train-the-trainer’ sessions

Future Plans for Teacher Training Resources: Free online software (e.g Google Hangouts, Prezi) to present and record the module content Social media Contents: Background to social norms Generating data (needs assessment) Using data to promote social norms and demonstrate outcomes Case studies of good practice examples Applying Drug education to the new Ofsted framework Contribution of Drug education to developing resilience ADEPIS Quality Mark
