Who? Sam Houston George Campbell Childress Richard Ellis 59 delegates

When? March

Where? Washington- on-the-Brazos

Why? Texans realized that if they were going to achieve change, they must establish a common goal, Independence form Mexico.

What? Sam Houston struggled to keep people at the convention, they all wanted to go and help at the Alamo. Houston convinced them that the only way Texas was to succeed was to create a strong government.

What? George Childress was elected to head the committee to write a Declaration of Independence for Texas. He worked throughout the night, and the following day, March 2, 1836, Texas declared itself an independent republic.

What? Childress modeled the document after the one written for the United States by Thomas Jefferson in Childress included a long list of misdeeds by Mexico and claimed that Mexico did not protect the rights of its people.
