Moonshine Public Library

We Don’t Want to End Up Like Sunny Glow Library

S W O T Strengths: Weaknesses: Opportunity: Threat: Willingness of staff to tackle this issue Lack of public space-poor space flow with excess carts To clean up collection and make it more current Possibility of bad publicity Collaboration between departments to solve this situation Books not organized as efficiently as possible To make some money selling weeded materials Possibility of disagreements on how to accomplish tasks Lack of funds for purchase of new shelving immediately Look and be more organized Realize the need for additional shelving and plan for the future

The weeding process provides 4 Opportunities: 1.staff leadership and learning 2.the MPL to gain positive publicity 3.address the shelving budget and plan for the future 4.improve the library’s collection, organization, and appearance

Mission Statement Our library strives to be an approachable, intellectually accessible organization that is sensitive to the needs of all users while providing a positive learning environment…

Weeding Policy Materials that no longer meet the stated mission of the library (including items that have become damaged or obsolete) will be withdrawn from the library’s public collection according to the accepted professional practices described in the CREW* method… * See CREW: A Weeding Manual for Modern Libraries

… Disposal of withdrawn library materials will be at the discretion of the library director, subject to all relevant provisions of the Charter of the Town of Moonshine and in the most economically eco-friendly manner. Weeding Policy continued

“Next to emptying the outdoor book drop on cold and snowy days, weeding is the most undesirable job in the library. It is also one of the most important” “A good library collection is like a good haircut. It’s not what you cut – it’s what you leave”
