Jamestown & the Chesapeake BEGINNINGS OF ENGLISH AMERICA,

 English Emigrants  Between , over half a million people left England  Economic problems  Overpopulation  Most of the English to North America were:  young, single men  lower ranks of English society  Three Colonial Regions:  Chesapeake  New England  Middle THE COMING OF THE ENGLISH

 Indentured Servants:  Most Englishmen arrived as indentured servants  voluntarily surrendered their freedom for a period of time (often five to seven years) in exchange for passage to America.  Similiarity to slavery:  Bought/ sold  Permission to marry  Difference:  Eventually would earn freedom THE COMING OF THE ENGLISH
