UMC “Includes” ME Inclusion Culture Training

What is Diversity? Diversity is everything that makes us similar to and different from one another.

What is Inclusion? Inclusion is when EVERYONE, regardless of who they are, feels welcomed and accepted.

What is in an Inclusive Environment? In an inclusive environment, you are building a culture of inclusive In an inclusive environment, you are encouraging everyone to fully participate in building that inclusive culture In an inclusive environment, you are promoting full access to all opportunities in your organization

What’s in UMC’s Inclusive Culture/Environment for me? 1.Pride in your work environment 2.Camaraderie 3.Opportunities

What’s in an Inclusive Culture/Environment for UMC? 1.High employee satisfaction 2.Improved patient care 3.Improved financial performance 4.Stronger relationships

What’s UMC Inclusion Goal? 1.To continue to build a inclusive culture by increasing employees’ awareness of how we think about and we treat each other. 2.To continue to build an inclusive culture where we have productive and respectful relationships with all co-workers and customers, whether we think they are similar or different than ourselves.

Learning about Culture – Building the Culture What is culture? 1.It is a way of life of a given society, passed down from one generation to the next through learning and experience. 2.It is a way of life for a group of people; every group develops is own culture over time. 3.It is a set of rules both written and unwritten, by which people live. 4.It is learned. 5.It is complex. We are often not aware of the influence of our own culture until we leave it and become immersed in another culture.

Why Appreciate Different Cultures at UMC? UMC feels it is important to the success of our organization. Employees bring different skills and talents to the workplace to helps fulfill the Hospital’s Mission and Vision.

Building an inclusive culture means eliminating “Stereotyping” What is a stereotype? A stereotype is usually an idea or assumption that a person has about an entire group, and therefore, to any individual that may belong to that group, often relating to gender, age, ethnicity, physical appearance, or characteristics that can be grouped together. They are usually negative and offensive.

Common Stereotypes Teenagers are lazy. All Asian-Americans are good in math. You know how women are. She’s a dumb blonde. He’s really sensitive for a man. You’re not like other Jewish people. Why are you doing that? Girls are supposed to be sweet. Old people shouldn’t behave like that. Sam, what do gay men think about this? He’s Muslim so he must be a terrorist. Fat people are lazy.

Stop Stereotypes Creating an inclusive culture in any organization requires increasing our own awareness of stereotyping and CHOOSING NOT TO ACT ON OUR STEREOTYPES.

UMC’s Inclusive Culture/Environment UMC “Includes” Me We all have a role in building an inclusive environment by helping to build an culture of inclusion. Creating a respectful, productive workplace depends upon your commitment and involvement in building that culture. It’s up to each of us to increase our knowledge and appreciate the value of the different cultures we have here at UMC.
