Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress Chapter 3

First a flashback to chpt 2 Phoenix of the Sky. What is a phoenix? Think of one or two descriptive words to describe themountains.

Look at this quote: “What we dreaded most of all was having to carry buckets full of shit on our backs…. Dear reader, I will spare you the details of each faltering step; suffice it to say that the slightest false move was potentially fatal.” What do you find interesting/unusual about this?

Vocabulary words prudent ( p.22) ventured (p.24)

Questions 1. What does the little seamstress look like? Why is she described as the princess of Phoenix Mountain? 2. Why does the narrator start describing the seamstress at her feet? What does this accomplish? What does this tell you about the seamstress? What does this tell you about the narrator?) 3. Why is the tailor treated like a king? What separates him from the other people on the mountain? 4. Why is the seamstress drawn to the boys? What does the story say that makes you think that? 5. Is the narrator interested in the seamstress? Why isn’t Luo interested in the seamstress? What kind of girl would Luo be interested in? Which of the two boys might the seamstress prefer? What does the story say that makes you think that?

Classwork/Homework Look at chapter 3 in detail and note down a few specific quotes about the LCS. Specifically, look for evidence that she is shown as a typical “princess” of fairy tales. Read both chapters 3 and 4 for Friday. Do your summary
