Mr. Owens

Climate Climate is the average condition of the weather over a long period of time across a large are of the worlds surface. 3 factors influence this: 1. Latitude (distance from equator) 2. Distance from Sea 3. Prevailing winds (southerly winds warm, northerly winds cold)

Climate There are different climates within the larger regional climates. The climate experienced by a small region is known as a local climate. Factors that influence local climates: 1. Aspect (direction of sun) 2. Altitude (height above sea level)

Climatic Zones 1. Hot Climate 2. Temperate Climate 3. Cold Climate

Class Work Choose any country and find the following: 1. Which climatic zone is it in? 2. Its avg. temperature 3. Its avg. yearly rainfall 4. Its natural vegetation (jungle/desert/grassland etc.) 5. Its wildlife Use your iPad to research the above info!

Hot Climates Most hot climates are found at the equator. They include: hot desert climate equatorial climate savanna climate Pg 108 for diagram and climates (read)

Classwork: Focus on Hot Desert Climate Create your own notes using the book! (pg 109/110) Subtract the most important info and put it into your own words where possible for ‘Hot Desert Climate’. Use the following headings: Temperature Rainfall Vegetation (Flora) Animals (Fauna)

Homework Read pg’s 111 & 112 in book on desertification. You will be asked Q’s, at random, about this in Tuesday’s class!

Desertification Desertification means turning land into desert. It occurs when desert conditions spread into lands that were once fertile. Usually happens at the edge of existing deserts. E.g Sahel, a region at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert (North Africa)

Desertification Create your own notes using the book! (pg 111/112) Subtract the most important info and put it into your own words where possible for ‘Desertification ’. Use the following headings: 1. Causes 2. Results 3. Solutions

Desertification in the Sahel Write down any 3 pieces of interesting information!

Recap Name the 3 types of climates on Earth? Name an example of a hot climate? What is desertification? Name a place you have studied that has experienced desertification.

Temperate Climate Most temperate climates are found at mid latitudes. They include: Cool Temperate Oceanic Climate Pg 114 for diagram

Classwork: Focus on Temperate Oceanic Climate Create your own notes using the book! (pg 114) Subtract the most important info and put it into your own words where possible for ‘Cool Temperate Oceanic Climate’. Use the following headings: Temperature Rainfall Vegetation (Flora) Animals (Fauna)

Cold Climate Cold climates are usually found in the northern hemisphere. Typically found in high altitudes of the American and Eurasian landmasses. (fig.5.14) 2 climates: 1. Tundra 2. Boreal

Boreal Climate Temperature Rainfall Summers have long hours of Sun (15C) Winters have long hours of darkness (-25c) 400mm yearly Mostly snow

Boreal Climate Vegetation Evergreen forest called taiga. Trees in the taiga are coniferous. Coniferous: trees that are cone-bearing. Taiga forest accounts for 20% of worlds forested area.

Boreal Climate Wildlife The Taiga has a variety of wildlife who have all adapted to their environment overtime: Grizzly bears avoid winter through hibernation Fur acts as insulation

Climate 1. Hot Climate: Hot desert climate (desertification) 2. Temperate Climate: Cool Temperate Oceanic Climate (Ireland) 3. Cold Climate: Boreal climate (wildlife/forest/little human inhabitants)
