A PRESENTATION BY THE DISTRICT 1 COMMUITY COUNCIL SIDEWALK TO BATTLE CREEK REC

A HISTORY OF REC CENTERS IN DISTRICT 1 In 2008 Highwood Hills Rec Center (and Eastview Rec Center) were privatized. Highwood Hills Rec went back to the school district Was the closest community facility to a population of East African immigrants that included 400+ children under the age of 16 They were to use Battle Creek Rec along Winthrop St. instead – across a 45mph road with no traffic control except at McKnight, and no sidewalk from Lower Afton to Falcon St along Winthrop. Since then a county trail on the north side of Lower Afton was installed, but without connection from it to the existing sidewalk leading to rec center(and still no traffic control)

A NEIGHBORHOOD WITH NEED OF ACCESS

PROPOSAL To complete the sidewalk system along Winthrop St. from Lower Afton to Falcon St. on the Battle Creek Park side of the street (west side) To add pedestrian scale lighting along the sidewalk.

BENEFITS Increases safety of pedestrians (currently they often walk in the street, especially in winter) Completes the sidewalk grid in this area, connecting to a county trail and city sidewalk Enhances livability Encourages healthy activity If the city insists that the Highwood Hills children walk to Battle Creek Rec, the city should make it safe and easy for that to happen.

THANK YOU!!
