BASKETBALL HPWB 7 & 8

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Developed by Dr. Naismith in the late 1800’s at a college in Massachusetts. It started with the use of a fruit basket as a goal, which has evolved into the rim/ net combinations we see today.

Modern Day Basketball Many organizations and levels participate in basketball. From the recreation player to the elite levels such as NBA and WNBA, basketball is considered a lifelong sport. Typically, 5 players will challenge an opposing 5 players on a set court. The objective is to properly advance the ball to your goal or basket and shoot the basketball through. The defense objective is to prevent the offense from scoring. Many rules and procedures have been established to keep the game competitive and fair.

Basketball Skills: Teamwork-being the most important skill. Assists- creating a scoring opportunity for your teammates. Encouragement- cheering others to do their best. Positive feedback- telling others why they did a great job. Communication- talking about what to do. Passing- allowing for others to get involved.

Basic Physical Skills: V-cut- get open to receive the basketball, create space between you and the defender. Dribbling- without looking at basketball, using fingertips to control ball, looking up at defender, looking for passing opportunities, scoring, etc. Defensive dribbling- keeping defender away from the ball. Offensive dribbling- setting up a designed play by dribbling, passing, or scoring. Boxing out- blocking the opponent from getting the ball.

Continued: Give and go- setting up a play to pass and quickly move to a new position. Passing- bounce pass, chest pass, 1 hand pass, no look pass, etc. Person to person defense- you are responsible for guarding a specific player at all times. Zone defense- you are only responsible for a certain area or zone of the court. If player moves out of that zone, he or she becomes another player’s responsibility. Scoring- free throws (1 point each), 2 point goal (inside the 3 point arc), and 3 point goal (outside the 3 point arc).

Movement Skills Agility- quickly change directions Movement with or without the basketball Running Shuffling Jumping Spinning Footwork Fakes Etc.

Shooting Skill Cues and Keys 90 degrees (bent) at the elbow Elbow tucked into your midline Look at target Extend your shooting arm straight to basket Follow through as ball leaves your hand

Triple Threat Cues and Keys: Good body position with ball control Court and player awareness (know where offense and defense is) Keep defender away from ball Consider options to either pass, dribble, or shoot (hence the triple threat).

Defense Cues and Keys: Good body position against offense. Use bent knees, body, and hands to defend. Avoid too much contact or it becomes a foul. Usually 1 hand up, 1 hand down on offense. Be able to quickly react to offense.
