BASICS TO KNOW FIRST Be on guard at all times Attempt to intercept passes Attempt to block shots Maintain and cover your ground Help defense- trap the offense with help from another player of your team
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! GO OUTSIDE OR FIND A BASKETBALL COURT, AND PRACTICE THESE MOVES YOURSELF
DEFENSIVE SLIDE Knees bent Feet spread more than shoulder length apart Back straight Should feel like you’re sitting up Arms straight out 90 degrees to body & parallel to the ground Head up, eyes aware of surroundings Shuffle your feet across the floor sideways- form left to right Touch foot to foot Don’t “gravevine” (cross your legs over)
COVERING Keep on an opponent or spot on the floor Defensive stance Head up Eyes aware of surroundings Concentrate on the ball and its path Also be aware of opponents’ moves and where your teammates are on the floor
BLOCKING THE SHOT Get in the way of the opponent Don’t give them an easy target Get in their line between the opponent and the basket Hands up First blocking the ball Second hands in face distorting line of vision Always protect your basket
REBOUNDING Get in position under basket Get in between the line of the basket and the opponent(s) Box out- block an opponent(s) by using your arms and body weight make yourself “big” by spreading your arms and leaning your body into them Put your bottom into them Grab the ball, immediately protect it Pivot toward the opposite basket- 3 options Look down the floor to pass to a teammate Pass it to your point guard to bring it down the court Dribble the ball yourself
DEFENSIVE POSITIONING Zone defense have a certain area of the floor to cover Man defense have a certain opponent to cover and block the ball away from
