Unit 6 Homework - Reading Read Chapter 13

Unit 6 Homework – Discussion Board Refer to the unit readings and answer the following: In your best judgment, based on the readings, do you think that a control system needs to be developed to address these issues? Why or why not?

Unit 6 Homework – Assignments This week's assignment consists of watching a scenario about Sandwich Blitz, Inc and reading the textbook section on Bureaucratic Control Systems in the Bateman and Snell text.

Unit 6 Homework – Assignments continued Lei noticed what appeared to be a discrepancy in the time sheet of one of the customer associates. When she asked the location manager about this, she learned that the team supervisor had allowed the associate to report hours not actually worked in this pay period, thus receiving pay for time not yet earned. Lei did not like this practice and immediately viewed this as a control issue. After checking the employee handbook which had been in effect since she and Dalman were actively managing the single location, she discovered that this practice was not covered. She also realized that many of the duties that employees were expected to do and were in fact, evaluated on were also not clearly addressed.

Unit 6 Homework – Assignments continued After reading the scenario above and the textbook section on Bureaucratic Control Systems, respond to the following question: Question: How can Lei apply the four step control process outlined in the text to address the problem of misreporting hours?

Unit 6 Homework – Assignments continued Submission Instructions: Draft your Assignment paper at least one full double-spaced page in length, using size 12 Times New Roman font in MS Word format. Be sure your paper is well written in paragraph form, with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Be sure to name your file according to the Kaplan file-naming convention. Submit your Assignment to the correct unit Dropbox for grading before the close of the unit as an attachment.

Unit 6 Homework - Quiz Four functions of management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling). There are 5 items for each of the four functions. Twenty questions Two hours Take one time only Multiple choice

Unit 6 Homework Remember to use the appropriate DropBox. If you do not submit to the correct DropBox I can’t grade.

Unit 5 - Leading Name these P O L C

Leading Introduction In Unit 5, we are considering: That leading is one of the four primary functions of management. That effective leaders are talented in combining strategy and interpersonal skills to formulate plans and implement strategies that create positive results.

Introduction to Leading, Cont’d. That there are key similarities and differences between leading and managing. That managers can employ practical, effective techniques for increasing people's effort and performance.

What IS a leader? In your own words and based on your opinions, let’s answer this question.

Simple definition from the authors… A leader is one who influences others to attain goals. The greater the number of followers, the greater the influence. The more successful the attainment of worthy goals, the more evident the leadership.

What do People Want…from Leaders? Think about a leader in your workplace, school, or other organization that you are affiliated with. What do you expect of that person? Let’s take a few moments and make a list of our expectations of our leaders and see if there are any commonalities. How comfortable are you with the idea of people expecting these qualities from you?

What do we want from Leaders? We have to remember that organizations need employees to be leaders as well. We expect things from our leaders in business but they also expect things from us. Business consultants Kouzes and Posner say the best leaders: Challenge the process Inspire a shared vision Enable others to act Model the way Encourage the heart

Please add any questions and comments …about leaders and what people expect from them (us).

Charismatic vs. Transformational Leaders Your readings discuss charismatic versus transformational leaders. Let’s start by describing each type. What is a charismatic leader? What is a transformational leader?

Charismatic Leaders A Charismatic Leader Inspires followers Is dominant, self confident Is convinced of the morality of his/her beliefs Arouses a sense of excitement and adventure Usually an eloquent speaker Can you think of individuals who, in your opinion, fit this description of a charismatic leader?

Transformational Leaders A transformational leader: motivates (moves) people beyond excitement, beyond their personal interest, to act for the good of the group. not only generates excitement, but also revitalize organizations. gives followers individualized attention. is intellectually stimulating. helps organizations and individuals explore Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) ultimately motivates people into action

Charismatic vs. Transformational Is it possible for one person to be both a transformational and charismatic leader? Which type of leader are you or do you envision yourself becoming?

Please add any questions and comments …about charismatic and transformational leadership.

Leadership Traits Do you think that some people are “born leaders”? Do you think that leadership skills can be learned?

Certain leadership characteristics have been identified among successful leaders Fortunately, these traits can be cultivated or learned by those of us who aren’t “natural born leaders”… Drive (high level of effort; high need for achievement) Leadership motivation (want to lead) Integrity (“walk the talk” thereby inspiring trust) Self-confidence (confident, not arrogant!) Knowledge of the business (inside-out; they’ve done their homework!)

Recap We have discussed the following aspects of leading, including: What do people want from their leaders? Charismatic vs. transformational leaders Leadership traits

There are 3 graded assignments in Unit 5. Discussion Board Assignment: Dalman and Lei have decided to meet a venture capital group in New York to discuss the possibility of internal expansion of Sandwich Blitz, Inc., and to find out if acceptable financing can be arranged. Dalman has always been the one who could voice the Sandwich Blitz vision. He has usually been the visible “voice” for the company while Lei has usually worked behind the scenes to handle financial matters. They are both worried in this situation. Dalman is afraid that he lacks the financial background to satisfy these financiers. Lei is afraid that she might not have the marketing skills needed to convince this group of the unique capabilities of Sandwich Blitz. Refer to your unit readings, about leading and managing. In your judgment, what is Sandwich Blitz more in need of in this situation: a manager or a leader? What is the difference between the two? How would you resolve this dilemma if you were Dalman or Lei?

Quiz Business is going relatively well at Sandwich Blitz, Inc. However, Dalman and Lei have noticed that an increasing number of employees and store managers are arriving late to work. They are wondering what they should do. Referring to the readings section on Power and Leadership, respond to the quiz questions related to the scenario. You will be able to enter the quiz only once. There is a 2-hour time limit.

Review Don’t forget that you can take the Review as often as you need to prior to the Tuesday midnight deadline until you get the score that you desire.

Thank You for Attending! This concludes our seminar for Unit 5. I appreciate your taking the time out to join me and to invest in the concepts about leadership and leading.
