India India is the world's largest democracy, with 1.2 billion people India has the second largest population in the world, with over 1.2 billion people (1,205,073,612 as of July 2012). India became an independent nation in 1947 after ending British rule that began in Mahatma Gandhi is famous for the important part he played in gaining India's independence.

The most popular sport in India is cricket, with the Indian team being the first to win the Cricket World Cup on home soil when they were victorious in India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, but has never hosted the Olympic Games.

India Flag India's flag was adopted on July 22, 1947, after India became independent from Great Britan India's flag is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron (orange) on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. Each colour represents something different: Saffron represents stands for courage and sacrifice White represents peace, unity and truth. Green stands for faith and fertility. The blue symbolizes the sky and the ocean. Dharma Chakra In the center of the white band is a blue wheel with 24 spokes. This is the Dharma Chakra (or "Wheel of Law"), the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. The Chakra represents the continuing progress of the nation and the importance of justice in life. This center symbol or the 'CHAKRA', is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200th century BC.

National Tree The National Tree of India is the Banyan Tree (Fig Tree). National Fruit The National Fruit of India is the Mango. There are over 100 varieties of mangos in India, in a range of colours, sizes, and shapes. National Sport The National Sport of India is the Hockey.
