Men are from Earth, Women are from ORIENT An Engagement Scenario for ORIENT

Engagement Scenario Outline Goal –To stay in the Cog’s environment –To offend the Cogs would mean exile Key events –Cogs sing to each other to communicate feeling (volume, pitch, speed, tone) –Cog will follow and continue to sing – user can’t escape by leaving the immediate environment Possible event outcomes –User decides to pursue romantic relationship –User decides to match different Cogs What is meant to happen –User has to discover the meaning of singing –Use of ‘digital notes’ in the physical environment (RFID) –Observation of other Cogs in the virtual environment What is start event –Romantic advance received by user (singing) What is end event –User learns about Cog ‘romantic strategies’ –User resolves the advance by: agreeing to become involved with the Cog – Cog and user sing together by finding a compatible Cog for the first

Playing the Scenario Users are given a number of tunes, which can be manipulated Users can learn which manipulations relate to which emotions Learning manipulations can be done through: –Digital notes –Asking other Cogs for advice –Trial and error

Bennet‘s Model Differentiation-Appreciation: –Learn what the songs mean –Learn how to produce appropriate songs Reflection: –Teach another culture –Explain purpose of the Cog‘s songs –Questions prompt user to explain link between manipulations and emotion Transfer: –Basic concept of expressing emotion can be applied in attempting to learn about a new culture
