Just how popular was the Vietnam War? A study of two contrasting photographs.

What did the US people think about the war? A B Pro Anti

So how can we explain the obvious difference? What questions do SMART historians ask when they see photographs like this? Work in pairs to come up with your TOP 5 questions.

What questions do we need to ask? When was this photo taken? What event is Johnson speaking at? Where is this taking place? Why might the photograph have been taken? Have people turned against the war, as this photo suggests? If so, why? Who are these people and why are they there?

The answers we need July 1966 Supporter s who back the war, at a rally Indianapoli s October 1967 Protesting crowd are students Marching on the Pentagon building To show extent of support for Johnson? To bring an end to the war Smiling faces?

So the photos show… Different times: have attitudes changed? Different events: support rally and protest march Different sections of society: e.g. students Different places: politicians/policies can be popular locally but not nationally Different purposes, or just different stories?: to show extent of support for Johnson in A and opposition to him in B.

Background Cyrus Vance whose name appears on the placard in photo A was the Deputy Defence Secretary who initially supported the war and then changed his views advising the President to withdraw troops from South Vietnam.
