The Utes The word “Utah” comes from the Ute word for “top of the mountains.” The Utes were the largest tribe in Utah. Their tribal area covered most.

 They often wore animal skin for clothes.  They told traditional stories to the children.  Tobacco is placed in a pipe bowl and smoked during different religious,wars, and peace ceremonies.

 Several bands camp together to share the natural plants from the harvest such as nuts, grass seeds, fruit, berries, teas, and other plants they also ate meat such as deer, rabbit, elk, fish, horse, turkey, and more!

 They lived in Arizona, California and parts of Nevada.  They live in wicki-ups during winter and they lived in tepees when it’s warm.

 Paiute people wore few clothes. During the summer the children wore nothing. They often wore leather clothes.  Men wore breechcloths and women wore skirts.

 They helped the Mormon pioneers. But that is all we know, because they were taken advantage of and lost their land, and were killed by white men.

It is common to have 900 members. The tribe in Las Vegas only had 65 members. That’s small!!
