Chapter 2 Chemistry of Life Section 1: Nature of Matter

Made of atoms Made of one atom

Atoms Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space Matter is made of atoms Atoms are made of electrons, protons, and neutrons A pure substance made of one specific kind of atom is called an element.

1.Mass number = protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom (added together) 2.Atomic number = number of protons or electrons (separately) 3.Symbol represents the element (made of one kind of atom) 4.Atomic mass = the weight of that element.
