Fires on the Farm

Barn Fires Between , there were an estimated 1,000 structure fires in livestock, poultry storage, barns, stockyards, and animal pens reported annually These fires resulted in an annual average of 2 civilian fire deaths 10 civilian injuries $32 million in direct property damage

Leading Causes of Fires and Property Damage 2008 Source: NFIRS and NFPA Survey

Barn Fires Heating equipment is the leading cause of fires in barns. Heat lamps are leading equipment to cause these fires. Structural fires in barns are more frequent in late winter and early spring months. Barn fires are not small. Half of all barn fires involved the entire building.

What do you do in the event of a barn fire…

What to do in case of a fire… Get out of the building Call 911 immediately Do NOT enter the fire building Nothing in that building is worth your life Remain calm (seconds and minutes may feel like hours and days but the fire department will come)

How to use a fire extinguisher Call 911 FIRST Fire Extinguisher Video P.A.S.S. Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep

A,B,C ‘s of Fire Extinguishers

Class A - Ordinary Combustibles Class A is used for paper wood cardboard hay plastics

Class B - Flammable Liquids/Gases Class B is used for Flammable materials Gas Grease Oil Kerosene

Class C - Electrical Class C is used for Appliances Wiring Electrical Circuit breakers outlets Never use water to extinguish class C fires - the risk of electrical shock is far too great!

Class D - Metal Fires Class D is used for Sodium Potassium Titanium Magnesium Never use water to extinguish class D fires- The materials provide a source of oxygen so water will not extinguish the fire. Use a blanket of non reactive power like salt.

Helpful Hints Always have address number clearly marked at the end of your driveway Where there is smoke there is fire When using electrical lamps and heaters always use a G.F.C.I. (ground fault circuit interrupter)

Where there is smoke there is fire

Create a Fire Safety Flyer for a Barn Your flyer should include -P.A.S.S -What to do in case of a fire Put your name on your flyer and hand the flyer into the inbox.
