Objective 3.3 Congressional Representation KQ- How is the # of representative per state determined?

The Senate Determining the # of representatives per state in the senate is easy… 2 per state, 50 states 100 total senators

The House Determining the # of representatives per state in the House is NOT so easy… The government relies on the Census to collect population data The more people a state has, The more representatives in the House

Census A survey used for counting the nations population A census is taken every 10 years

1.Determines total population of Country, state, county, city etc. 2.Population number helps decide # of Representatives in the House 3.Records population statistics of different areas- (Race, Gender, age, income) How is the Census used?

Apportionment Using census data to determine the # of represenatives is known as

How is the Census used to decide the # of representatives in each state??

The Formula: 1. United States population / 435= People per district 2. State Population/ PPD = # of Representatives

The 2000 census: United States population = 281,421,906 divided by total # of representatives in the House

281,421,906 ___________________________ divided by total # of representatives in the House 435

281,421,906 ÷ 435 = 646,946

every 646,946 people in a state =1 Representative in the House of Representatives

States are divided into districts based on their population 646,946 people=1 district

Representation in VA Virginia population: 7,078,500

census Virginia population: 7,078,500 ÷ 646,946 = (11)

U.S. = 281,421,906 Va. = 7,078, districts 646,946 in each district

Your District VA #2 Your Representative Scott Rigell

Your District VA #2 Your Representative Scott Rigell Representatives are responsible for listening to the needs of people in their district

Populations change… As populations grow in some areas and shrink in others, districts need to be adjusted

What do we do if a State with a big population loses a lot of its citizens after a new census is taken? reapportionment

Take away some of the Representatives and give them to another state. New districts are created after every Census

reapportionment The Changing (redrawing) of the lines that divide districts within a state is known as:

In your words… How is the Census used to determine the # of representatives per state?

In my words… Every 10 years the census is used to determine the total population of the US and each state. The total population is then divided by 435, the # of representatives in the House. This determines how many people should be represented in a state’s district. The states are divided into districts based on their populations and one representative is given to each district.
