Welcome to Counseling!

Learning Targets Understand the role of the school counselor and how to make an appointment to visit the counselor Identify times when you may want or need to talk to the school counselor Identify bullying behaviors, how to stop a bully, and how to report bullying at Paine Elementary

Meet Mrs. Blake I taught 4 th grade for 10 years. This is my 5 th year to be a school counselor at Paine Intermediate. I have 2 sons. Tyler is in 5 th grade and Matthew is in 2 nd grade.

Meet Mrs. Blake (continued) I have a dog named Blue. I like to… –Spend time with my family –Read –Spend time outside –Watch football and baseball with my boys (Roll Tide!)

All About Counseling Poster rotation ACtivity Stay in your group of 6-7 students. Begin at your assigned poster. Read what is already written on the poster. If something you are thinking is already written down, put a beside it to let us know that your group or someone in your group is thinking the same thing. Write down your group’s thoughts on the poster. Stay at your poster until the bell rings. When the bell rings, go to the next poster. You will answer a total of 6 questions.

What are some of the jobs of the school counselor? Meet one-on-one with students Lead small groups to help kids Teach monthly whole-class lessons Organize and oversee Club Day Lead the Husky Helpers Club Help plan the Leader In Me Assemblies Meet with parents Help out and observe in classrooms

My Office Remember, I’m across from the art room in the counseling suite in the very back. You cannot see my office from the door.

What do Kids Talk to the School counselor about? If you feel worried, sad, scared, angry, or lonely, and you want someone to talk to. If you need ideas to help solve problems at school or at home. If you need help solving a problem with a friend. If you need to report an issue with a bully. If you need help dealing with changes in your family.

How to Visit the School Counselor Fill out an Appointment Request Form. You can get one from your teacher or on the shelf outside of my office. Give it to your teacher, put it in my mailbox in the office, or put it in the special box outside of my office door.

Remember… I do not have a magic wand! I can HELP you but I cannot solve your problems for you. Go to your classroom teacher FIRST if the problem involves anyone in your class or switch class. There is one of me and over 600 of you!

How Do I know When It’s My Turn to Meet with Mrs. Blake? I will put a colored appointment card in your teacher’s box for you. Come to my office at your scheduled time. If you forget, let me know and we will reschedule your appointment. It is your job to remember your appointment, not your teacher’s job.

Bully Unit review: Are You A Bully? Bullying is a pattern of repeated behavior that is meant to hurt someone (physically, emotionally, or socially) and usually has an imbalance of power (physical or social).

Bully Unit review: Are You A Bully? It’s NOT okay to… Push Hit Hurt Others Threaten Intimidate Others It’s also NOT okay to… Tease in a hurtful way Join in laughing when someone is making fun of someone else Exclude others from the group or activities Roll our eyes intending to hurt others Boss our friends around Spread rumors about others

Bully Unit review: 5 Ways to Stop A Bully 1.Pretend the Bully Doesn’t Bother You 2.Tell the Bully to Stop 3.Stand Up Together 4.Ignore and Walk Away 5.Tell an Adult

How Can You Report Bullying? Talk to your teacher, specialist teacher, bus driver, etc. Fill out a red counseling form or write a note on any kind of paper and put it in Mrs. Blake’s box, slide it under her door, or put it in the box outside her office Remember, try “5 Ways to Stop a Bully” first and see if you can handle it yourself. If the bullying is physical or if there is a weapon or threat involved, talk to an adult right away!
