Calvin Cycle Chapter 10.3

Learning Target 3 (10.3) I can describe how the Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to convert carbon dioxide to sugar.

Calvin Cycle Part of photosynthesis that makes glucose

Light Independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle)  NADPH and ATP generated in light dependent reactions run the Calvin Cycle  Depends on light reactions even though it happens in light and dark  Many cycles produce glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 )

3 Stages  Carbon fixation  Rubisco  Rubisco enzyme attaches CO 2 gas to RuBP molecule  This molecule (6C) splits into 2 3C molecules  Reduction  ATP, NADPH provide energy to reduce these 3C molecules into G3P sugar (CH 2 O)  G3P sugars will build to make glucose or be stored for later use  Regeneration of CO 2 acceptor (RuBP)  ATP energy used to prepare RuBP receive next CO 2  3 turns required to make 1 G3P sugar  6 turns required to make 1 glucose

Calvin Cycle Summary  Reactants:  NADPH  ATP  CO 2  Products:  NADP +  ADP + P i  CH 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6
