The Applications of Proposition in the Churches of Galatia and Beyond Galatians #7 The Applications of Proposition in the Churches of Galatia and Beyond Galatians 6:1-18

Galatians #7, The Applications Confession Time: past lack of understanding regarding the text of chapter 6: >always made applications to me/us- nothing necessarily wrong with this, but…. >primary applications must always be made to the primary recipients, and >within the framework of the context of the letter!

Galatians #7, The Applications So, Now that we’ve done a better job of understanding both the Proposition which underlies the epistle, and the Arguments which have been made in support of it…. Let’s see if we can also do a better job of seeing the Applications of it through Galatian eyes!

Galatians #7, The Applications v.1, One caught in any trespass. A couple of things to be noted: -it says “a man” >not “a brother”- Would this then include non-Christians; perhaps even Judiazing teachers who lead others astray? -No, because >it also says “restore” - must then be a fallen brother.

Galatians #7, The Applications v.1, One Caught in Any Trespass. Furthermore: -subject is “caught” (entangled- regardless of reason) in any “trespass” - not a difference of opinion or judgment. -responsibility for restoration is upon the “spiritual” whether Elder, Preacher, Deacon, or Member! -must be with “gentleness” cf. 2Tim.2:24ff -and introspective care, cf. Mt.7:1ff Jn.10

Galatians #7, The Applications v.2, Bear One Another’s Burdens. -is a command, not a suggestion. -such fulfills the law of Christ (not Moses) -but must be taken in connection with v.5 Contradiction? Confusion? -Grk. baros in v.2 means excessive, while -Grk. phortion in v.5 means task/service No one can take on the task of being a Christian for you, but is commanded to help with that which is excessive.

Galatians #7, The Applications vv.3-4, Proper Self-Evaluation -is necessary for v.1’s fulfillment -Self-deception is the easiest and most dangerous kind! -One’s worth in Christ is directly dependent upon the foundation upon which he stands and builds! cf. 1Cor.3:4-15 Hence, the importance of v.6! (cf. 1Tim.5:17-18)

Galatians #7, The Applications vv.6-10, Sowing and Reaping -v.7 You don’t be deceived, God isn’t! -v.8 Sowing to the Flesh yields fleshly corruption, while sowing to the Spirit yields Eternal Life! Simple, cf. 5:19-23. -v.9 The harvest time of spiritual sowing may be slow but is worth it! -v.10 “Doing good” defined by context: >v.1 Restoring the fallen >v.2 Bearing one another’s burdens >v.6 Sharing with him who teaches

Galatians #7, The Applications vv.11-18, Paul and Circumcision -v.11 the personal touch to a personal letter! -v.12 Many false doctrines are just the easy way out! -v.13 Always beware of those unwilling to accept the conclusions of their doctrine, cf. Mt.23:2-8. -v.14 The only “boast” any Christian has is through the Cross of Jesus! cf. vv.3-4 -vv.15-16 Peace & Mercy to “Israel of God” -v.17 So leave me be about circumcision!
