CARRYING A CANDLE A song for schools supporting social justice

Composer Hugh Gibbons says... The song is meant to be simple to learn and short to perform in class or assembly. The opening and closing lines should be taken gently – but the main verses probably benefit from being belted out. If you’d like to add your own verse or version, you’re very welcome.

The aim is to have a song celebrating those who support social justice. So it’s something very much in the spirit of Oscar Romero – speaking out for those in need. So it’s a reminder of all those who act as voices for the voiceless, and campaigners for social justice. And there’s a special verse for a birthday girl on 12 July!

The first performance of Carrying a Candle was given to an audience of the rest of the school, staff and parents by the newly-formed choirs of St Francis of Assisi Primary in South Ascot, UK, on 28 March 2013 Angela McCarthy was the conductor, using the piano arrangement by Ron McAllister This is what they sang
