Some of the senses affect other senses. There are 5 senses that we use everyday to help us compete our daily tasks. Some of the senses affect other senses. The five senses are Sight, Taste, Touch, Sound, and Smell. 2

SIGHT The main sight organs are your eyes When you look at an object, what you are really seeing are beams of light bouncing off the object and going into your eyes. Rays of light travel through the structures of your eyes such as the cornea, the pupil, and the lens Rods help you see in dim light, and cones help you see in very bright lights. Eyebrows catch debris and act as a rooftop to prevent substances such as rain or sweat from getting into your eyes. Your eyelashes prevent dirt and dust from getting into our eyes, and the eyelids sweep the dirt off of the surface of the eye 3

SIGHT FUN FACTS The eye of a human can distinguish 500 shades of gray. All babies are born color blind. When you crying and your nose gets runny this occurs because the tears from your eyes drains into the nose. When you sneeze you automatically close your eyes because the speed can cause your eyes to pop out. You blink about 10 million times a year. The pupil is actually a hole that open into the back of the eye. 4

TASTE The main organ of the sense of taste is the tongue . The sense of smell and sight affects your sense of taste. Taste can be classified in five categories: Sweet, Sour, Bitter, Salty, and Umami (savoriness). Receptor cells in your taste buds send messages to your brain. Your brain tells you what flavors you are tasting. Taste buds recognizes the five groups of tastes. Taste buds can be found not only on your tongue but on the roof and sides of your mouth. 5

TASTE FUN FACTS Your taste buds are smaller closer to the tip of the tongue and larger towards the back. Taste changes as you get older. We have almost 10,000 taste buds inside of our mouths Taste is the weakest of the 5 senses. Food doesn’t taste as good to a person with a cold or a blocked nose. 6

TOUCH Your sense of touch is found all over your body. Your sense of touch originates in the dermis. Some places in your body are more sensitive than others. Small nerve collect information from things that come in contact with your body. The information is carried to the spinal cord, then sent to the brain. There are many kinds of receptors but the main ones are temperature, pressure, and pain. 7

TOUCH FUN FACTS You have more pain nerve endings than any other type. The least sensitive part of your body is the middle of your back. The most sensitive areas of your body are your hands, lips, face, neck, and tongue, fingertips, and feet. Shivering is what your body does to try to get warmer. 8

SOUND The main organ of the sense of sound are your ears. Sound travels through you ears and causes vibrations when it hits the eardrum. Those vibrations goes through the cochlea. The cilia turns the vibrations into messages, and then sends them to your brain. Then, the brain tells you what you are hearing. You can recognize many sounds because it is stored in your memory. Liquid in your cochlea helps you keep your balance. 9

An adult ear is less sensitive than a child’s ear. SOUND FUN FACTS When you go up to very high levels, the difference in pressure makes your ears pop. An adult ear is less sensitive than a child’s ear. An earache is caused by too much fluid putting pressure on your eardrum. 10

SMELL The main organ of your sense of smell is your nose. When you smell an odor, you smell some of the millions of odors particles in air that surrounds you. When smell are recognized in the olfactory bulb, each of the molecules match a nerve cell which they fit into perfectly. From there, signals are sent to your brain to be interpreted The memory and your nose are connected very well Told you what you might think when you have to 11

SMELL FUN FACTS The sense of smell gets worse as you get older. Your body can smell up to 10,000 different kinds of odors. When you smell a particular odor, you may remember a time you went somewhere. As you get older, your sense of smell gets worse. Children are more likely to have a better sense of smell than their parents. Everyone has their own special odor-identity. A rose can smell sweeter to some people than to others. 12
