When did the 3 rd Battle of Ypres begin? - July 31 st, 1917 When did the 3 rd Battle of Ypres end? - November 6 th, 1917

July 31 st - Battle of Pilckem Ridge August 16 th to 18 th – Battle of Langemarck September 20 th to 25 th - Battle of Menin Road September 26 th to October 3 rd - Battle Polygon Wood October 4 th – Battle of Broodseinde October 9 th - Battle of Poelcappelle October 12 th – First Battle of Passchendaele October 26 th to November 6 th – Second Battle of Passchendaele

The battle was waged in Ypres, Belgium, for control of the small town of Passchendaele. It started on the 31 st of July and did not cease until mid-October. Conditions during the battle were very undesirable, the layout of the land in good weather already resembled a marshy, but when it rained it created an environment that is now associated with the misery of battle. A downpour could last for days, and with the British artillery blasting apart the surface of the ground, it would create large pools of impassable muck. Tanks at most times were unable to operate due to the Thick, slippery mud. Many soldiers were lost in the pools never to be found again. With the bad weather also came a low morale from the soldiers, this was a battlefield that few would refer to as glorious.

The 3 rd battle of Ypres is also known as, ‘The Battle of Passchendaele.’ it was the final battle of slow destruction of the war.
