Fourth Commandment Objectives: 1.List duties of parents and children 2.Explain what we owe to civic authority 3.Detail the reason spousal unity is essential 4.Define and explain what subsidiarity is

Honor Your Father and Your Mother Family as a community of love –Love others and seek their good –We are social animals –Learn & grow in the family Right from wrong How to treat others Pass on our culture Next generation of citizens What husbands and wives do

In the Old Testament –Several passages in the Old Testament –1 st commandment to carry a promise –You owe them for the gift of life –You can never repay parents for their sacrifice –You owe them care and love when they become enfebeled

Duties of Parents Fairness and understanding –Don’t provoke children –Healthy medium between laxity and tyranny –They are children of God Discipline –Proper use of freedom –Self-control –Sense of responsibility –Not friends but parents

Religious Education –Physical well-being and spiritual well-being –Primary responsibility to pass on the faith Schools aid in this responsibility Parents 1st –Not just learn the facts but live a truly Christ- centered life –Lead a simple life –Prayer time –Prep and reception of the sacraments –Fathers have a very important role in religious upbringing –Vocational choices are up to the individual not the parents

Duties of Children Filial Piety –It pleases Christ that we obey our parents –Parental authority is divinely bestowed Obey in all things that don’t violate conscience

Extended Family Who? Importance?

Spousal Unity What is it? –Permanence of marriage Why is it important? –Children do best in home with mom and dad –Emotional wounds –Loss of respect –Uncertainty about relations –Financial difficulties

Civic Obligations No person is an island Legitimate authority comes from God Form of government not divine To disobey is a sin Moral discretion –Unjust laws do not bind and must be disobeyed Disregard=pay the price –Jail and punishment if allowed Taxation Respect

Obligations of Governmental Leaders Common good –Help especially the weak –Respect fundamental rights of each person Principle of Subsidiarity –A higher organ of society must not interfere in the workings of a lower one unless the smaller is not able to fulfill its’ duties –Especially in the workings of the family

Conclusion All societies are based on the family As the family goes so goes society We are to be good stewards of soceity and especially the family
