Conjunctivitis (Pink- Eye) By: Paula Dzimira

What is it?  Conjunctivitis or Pink-Eye is an irritation and inflammation of the Conjunctiva (layer which covers the sclera (white portion of the eyeball))  It is spread through eye secretion contact. (I rub my eyes you rub your eyes, etc)

Symptoms?  Redness  Itching  Tearing of the Eye  Discharge  Crusting around the eye

Causes?  There are many things that can lead to pink-eye including:  Allergies  Bacterial Infections  Viral Infections  Damage to the Conjunctiva

Prevention?  REDUCE CONTACT WITH THOSE WITH PINK –EYE, AVOID PEOPLE WITH PINK-EYE, IT IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS  Make sure you’re contact lenses are clean  Do not rub your eyes, especially if ill.  DO NOT SHARE EYE DROPS.

Treatment & Cures?  Usually it will clear up on its own within a few days, however if….  Caused by Bacterial Infection treatment can be accelerated using antibiotic drops  Caused by Allergies can be treated with Antihistamines.  Medicated Eye drops can reduce itching.
