BIG IDEA to think about: Your associations with “home” are influenced by the social and cultural context of your life. Social and cultural factors influence us every day. How we behave, who we know and spend time with, and our sense of power and control over our lives are influenced by SCC.

Socio-Cultural Context- As you read, consider: What are the SOCIAL factors that influence how the characters behave and feel? What are the CULTURAL factors that influence how the characters behave and feel? What kind of “world” is the action of the story taking place in? I call this world the backdrop of their lives.

Passage: What is revealed about the socio- cultural context in which Della lives? “One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher. … One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. … While the mistress of the home is gradually subsiding from the first stage to the second, take a look at the home. A furnished flat at $8 per week. “ Annotations- Not a lot of money on hand. Pennies are counted= signs of poverty or at least struggle. No money to make Christmas special. Shabby couch= well worn, maybe dirty. Character crying alone on couch=feeling powerless

Questions to Ask of Your Novel What is going on behind the action of the story? Is there a war or other forms of political tension going on in the timeframe of the story? Is it set in the past which could explain why a character behaves a certain way? Where is the story set? Do people live by a different set of guiding principles than me? Does my character come from a specific religious or cultural background that sets out expectations for them? Is money an issue in their life? Are factors at home influencing how they behave or choices the make? Are their expectations on them because of gender roles and/or social norms in their society? These are some of the social and cultural factors that will influence a character.

Think of it as the “world” of the protagonist. Describe the socio-cultural context of your book and explain how it influences the story and, in particular, the protagonist. Include a Visual Component: Sketch a scene or images or collect images that depict the socio-cultural context of your novel!
