“End to End VoIP“ The Challenges of VoIP Access to the Enterprise Charles Rutledge VP Marketing Quintum Technologies

Why Is VoIP Exciting?  V oice o ver I nternet P rotocol - a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN.*InternettelephoneIPPSTN  A voice networking technology that improves electronic communications between people by utilizing voice to provide a richer experience. *webopedia

End to End Applications Deliver New Capabilities  Mobile “Phones” have brought new capabilities. –Text Messaging - Pictures. –Web and video access.  End to end VoIP brings value to both voice and data applications. –High quality voice – Presence – Instant Messaging. –Data applications that integrate voice. –Adding data applications to voice calls. What does End to End VoIP really bring? Innovation!

End to End Over IP Provides True Converged Communications  Any Media –Voice – Data - Image & Video.  Anywhere –Wired & Wireless via IP.  Any Device –Phones – PDAs, Computers, Television A Richer, More Flexible, More Productive User Experience I think we have found the problem!

The Greater the Number of Endpoints – The Greater the Value  Telephones. –Vast number of endpoints whose extensive connectivity delivers value.  Interoperability creates value. –VoIP endpoints. –Applications with integrated voice. VoIP Peering Creates Value by Providing More Community Connectivity

Early Market Deployments Face Limitations – Challenges In Access  VoIP islands connected with PSTN bridges.  VoIP has shown early market success. –The mainstream market is more demanding.  VoIP integration with existing enterprise voice systems. –PBXs, fax machines, paging systems, PSTN. IP Network or Internet Service Provider POP

The Scale and Nature of the Mainstream Market Delivers New Access Challenges  Ease of deployment.  QoS vulnerability.  Survivability/Reliability.  Security.  Management systems. –Fast deployment. –Large networks.

VoIP Access Requires Connectivity Between the Old and the New  VoIP Access Solutions will need to manage the migration to IP Telephony. IP PBX & Phones IP Clients Integrated Apps Traditional PBX Fax Machines Analog Phones Paging systems Intercoms Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) IP Voice Services IP Centrex PublicEnterprise IP Circuit VoIP MultiPath Switching Gateway Enterprise Session Controller VoIP Access Solution

VoIP Access Will Require VoIP Gateway and SBC Functions  Intelligent circuit and IP connectivity at the demarcation between public and enterprise. –Define a point where the service provider’s responsibility ends and the enterprise network begins. –A single interface for off-net VoIP traffic. –A single point of management. VoIP Access Solution IP PBX & Phones IP Clients Integrated Applications Traditional PBX Fax Machines Analog Phones Paging systems Intercoms IP Circuit Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) IP Voice Services IP Centrex PublicEnterprise

Scale of Mainstream VoIP Deployment Creates New Challenges  Easy deployment of CPE at the enterprise.  Plug and Play solution at the edge of the network. –Minimizes disruption to the existing network. –Ability to recognize and interface with existing network elements. VoIP Access IP PhonesVoIP App VoIP PBX PBX IP PSTN “MultiPath Switching Gateway”

Access is where the Greatest QoS Concerns Exist  The access is most vulnerable to QoS issues.  Still no single good answer!! –Allocate lots of bandwidth - limited applicability. –QoS Protocols – multiple alternatives.  Monitor and Manage QoS! –Carry voice on a logically separate path. –Fall back to the PSTN. VoIP Access IP Phones PBX IP PSTN “MultiPath Switching Gateway” Service Provider POP

Survivability Will be Important for VoIP Enterprise & Hosted Applications  The VoIP Access CPE must support calls even with IP failure. –VoIP Access Solution will register and process calls from VoIP phones and endpoints. –Both IP and circuit calls can be routed over alternative IP networks and/or the PSTN. VoIP Access IP Phones PBX IP PSTN Service Provider POP “MultiPath Switching Gateway”

Security Must be Considered for All Elements of the Calls  Denial of Service Attacks.  Signaling Security. –Hacking the signaling path to steal or disrupt service.  Voice or Media Security. –Keeps the call private.  Configuration & Management Security. –Authorizing the device on the network. –Encrypt messages between CPE and configuration server.

Remote Management Improves Efficiency and Customer Satisfaction  The Configuration and Network Management system sets up a session with the RMSS.  The RMSS acts as a “bridge” between the Tenor and Configuration and Network Management system. Enterprise PBX Tenor VoIP MultiPath Switch IP Phones & Clients Configuration and Network Management PSTN IP Remote Management Session Server (RMSS)

S/CM VoIP Deploys Vonage Service with Quintum Tenor VoIP Access Gateways  S/CM VoIP offers Vonage VoIP services to business customers. –Enterprise installations can be complicated. –Very sensitive to reliability. –Demand excellent customer service. PBX Tenor VoIP MultiPath Switch PSTN IP

S/CM VoIP Utilizes Remote Management To Provide Superior Customer Service  Remote Management system allows S/CM to address and resolve network issues without the customers’ assistance. –Tenor offers “drop-in installation” – auto-registration. –No need to walk the customer through troubleshooting. –Can quickly identify and resolve the customer’s problem. PBX Tenor VoIP MultiPath Switch Tenor Configuration and Network Management PSTN IP Quintum Remote Management Session Server

Conclusion  End to End VoIP pushes intelligence to the edge of the network and creates opportunity for innovation.  Pushing intelligence to the edge also pushes responsibilities : –QoS – Reliability – Survivability – SLAs – Security  The migration from traditional telephony to “end to end VoIP” will require intelligent connectivity at enterprise “ demarcation ”.  Simplicity will be key to address the mainstream scale.

Thank You!
