Key Points for Today’s Lesson Events of Chapter 13 and 14 occurred in Kadesh Team of 12 spies traveled through the promised land for 40 days Spies find the land is filled with many natural resources Some reported that the land was occupied by very strong forces, prompting the Israelites to rebel God punishes those that rebel and declares that all older than 20 would die in the desert during their 40 year sojourn, except for Caleb and Joshua

Last Week’s Lesson Events of last week’s lesson began in year two after the Exodus, in the second month, on day 20 Learned about the purpose of the silver trumpets to alert movement and announce festivals Learned about events as the Israelites travel from Sinai to Kadesh Barnea (complaints!) Learn about the rebellion of Miriam and Aaron against Moses, arising out of jealousy

Historical Background The book opens as the Israelites were in the second month of the second year after they departed Egypt (1:1) Chapters 7:1-10:10 occurred before the timeline of the events of the book of Numbers – Events occurred as Moses finished setting up the tabernacle – Tabernacle was set up on the 1 st day of the 1 st month of the 2 nd year; Numbers started on the 1 st day, 2 nd month, 2 nd year – Read Numbers 7:1, then Numbers 7:84, then Exodus 40:17, then Numbers 1:1 to better understand the timeline

Historical Background Continued Scholars determined the book had been written close to Moses’ death, around 1406 BC – Exodus happened around 1446 BC (1 Ki 6:1) – Israelites were in the wilderness 40 years (Num 32:13) – Moses died shortly before they entered the Promised Land (Deut 34:5) Numbers closes out when the Israelites were in the 10 th month of the 40 th year (see Deut 1:3) – The book of Numbers covers about 39 years

Geographical Background Israelites traveled from Mt. Sinai to the plains of Moab – East of Jericho and the Jordan River However, not a direct route – Proceeded from Sinai to Kadesh Barnea – On Canaan’s southern border Failed to proceed to the Promised Land from Kadesh Barnea because of unbelief – Wondered 38 more years in the wilderness God finally brings them back to Kadesh, then led them to the Plains of Moab on Canaan’s eastern border

Key Lessons Of Numbers Show how God dealt with the Israelites as they anticipate entrance into the Promised Land Events that led to the destruction of the older generations of Israelites in the wilderness Preparation of the new generation for entrance into the Promised Land Provided a warning to younger members of the community of Israel about the wrath of God on their parents because of their failure to obey the covenant

The Tribes of Israel

Sending of 12 Spies (13:1-2) Israelites arrive at Kadesh – God tells them to take possession of the land promised to them (read Deut 1:19-21) – Kadesh was in the Desert of Zin in the Widerness of Paran The Israelites ask Moses if they can send spies to “size” up the land for conquest – How should they attack – Was it worth it – Showed lack of faith and obedience God allows the Israelites to do this

Travel in the Promised Land (13:3-16) Spies are named – Representatives from all the tribes – Joshua from the tribe of Ephraim and Caleb from Judah were key participants Joshua – Also called Hoshea Meaning “he is saved” – Moses renames him Meaning "Yahweh is salvation"

Instructions in the Land (13:17-20) Moses directed the spies to explore Canaan – Through the Negev into the hill country Questions to answer – What is the land like – Is the land good or bad – Are the people strong or weak, few or many – What kind of towns, fortified or unfortified – How was the soil, fertile or poor – Trees or not, be sure to bring back some of the fruit But what for what ends?

Results of the Exploration (13:21-25) Travels – From Kadash to Rehob and Hebron – Traveled for 40 days Hebron – Where descendants of Anak lived – God had promised to Abraham (Gen 13:14-18) – This is where he was buried Valley of Eshkol – Harvested a cluster of grapes, pomegranates, figs Zoan is the same as Tanis, Egypt from where the Israelites came

Report of the Spies (13:26-33) Land was indeed full of fruit (vs. 27) – Went downhill from there Description of people and cities discouraged the spies and the people – Hittites, a native tribe in Canaan – Caused 10 of the spies to now disbelieve God’s promise Described tall Anakites as Nephilim – Nephilim means strong or tyrants, not necessarily giants, it was meant to invoke fear

Rebellion of People (14:1-12) God had proven His power three times to the Israelites since they left Sinai (see Ch 11-12) – No excuse not to trust God Moses and Aaron try to persuade the Israelites to enter the land (see Deut 1:29-31) – Also prayed for the nation as it rebelled – Joshua and Caleb warned the people The people rejected their pleas to trust and obey God – Moses intercedes – However, God declares he will destroy them

Moses’ Intercession (14:13-19) Moses intercedes again on behalf of the people – Based his appeal on God’ reputation among the Egyptians and other nations – Cited God’s promise that He would be patient – Moses’ words proved effective However, God would still punish the people

God’s Punishment (14:20-38) God’s grace is shown (vs ) – Israel’s disobedience would not thwart his promise to the earth through the seed of Abraham – Caleb and Joshua (vs. 30) would enter Canaan 10 times Israel tests God by complaining – Red Sea (Ex 14:11-12) – Marah (Ex 15:23) – Wilderness of Sin (Ex 16:2, 16:20, and 16:27) – Rephidim (Ex 17:1-2) – Horeb (Ex 32) – Taberah (Num 11:1-3) – Kibroth-hattaavah (Num 11:4-34) – Kadesh (Num 14:1-3) All 20 years or older would die in the Wilderness

Presumption of the People (14:39-45) Having received their sentence from the Lord, the people proceed to try and take the land – Trying to make it better that it was really going to be They had refused to accept God’s discipline – Even after Moses stated that God was not going to be with them What are the lessons for Christians today? – People, lacking faith, trying reach their mission without God are doomed to failure

Review Events of Chapter 13 and 14 occurred in Kadesh The Team of 12 spies traveled through the promised land for 40 days The spies found that the land was filled with many natural resources Some reported that the land was occupied by very strong forces, prompting the Israelites to rebel God punishes those that rebel and declares that all older than 20 would die in the desert during their 40 year sojourn, except for Caleb and Joshua Next week: Numbers 15-19
