Bellringer: Journal Entry What are your first impressions of All The Light We Cannot See ? For the next 10 minutes, you will be writing non- stop. It does not matter how much you write, it just has to be within ten minutes. Online Stopwatch

Symbolism Using an object or concept to represent a larger idea A symbol’s meaning may shift depending on the context Function in the text: makes texts more interesting to read, leaves clues to be figured out by the reader, repetition of symbols is called a motif

Characterization When the author makes a point to tell the reader about a character The analysis of a character over time Function in the text: exposition, point of view, gives the reader a first impression – something to build upon as he/she reads
