EIP Genre Project By Isaac Merritt

Research Focus Tuning the air intake on naturally aspirated engines to achieve greater Power and Torque figures Target Audience: People interested in tuning the intake of their naturally aspirated car to make significant power in a street application. Purpose: to Inform readers of the correct way to make power with their modifications Genre Idea: modify the air intake on my car with my current knowledge, and share what I did in a PowerPoint Reasoning: understanding methods and concepts can be made easier in a visual format like a PowerPoint opposed to a paper. Being able to see a physical manifestation of my own recommendations interests me. When things go from paper to the real world they get more complicated in ways people don’t plan for. Giving recommendations from a perspective of having done something is always better.

Lessons Learned From Research Longer tubes are preferable (unknown reason) Velocity stack is crucial The fewer the bends, the better Rough surfaces inside the intake (boundary layer)

Project Goal & Parameters Optimize existing intake tube Budget $60 Add velocity stack Lengthen system Remove as many 90 degree bends as possible Rough up pipe interior

Old System & Issues Angles of all bends added together = 270 degrees! Inside walls are smooth Filter is horribly built with angled inlet

Old System & Issues Angles of all bends added together = 270 degrees! Inside walls are smooth Filter is horribly built with angled inlet

Old System

More Old System Views

Purchases Scotch bright pads 24” 6061 aluminum tube New filter with velcocity stack

New System Plan Total angle value: 155 degrees Lengthened piping Roughed up internals for better flow Air filter has better flow characterisitics

New System

Construction and Complications One of the three orders of parts was sent to my home address in Pittsburgh, PA (7 hours north) Included in the order was this fitting The system renovation cannot be fully completed now.

Construction and Complications Air filter opening was poorly sized and required fitting I sanded the inside of the opening: problem solved Sanding the inside of longer tubes is difficult I made a tool from a coat hanger, a scotch bright pad, and an old silicone tube I had lying around. This worked decently to rough up the inside of the pipe

Results Rigged up the new parts to work with the old system in a weird hybrid Car was not able to break the tires free in first gear before Car can now brake the tires free in second gear
