Plate Tectonics The Earth' crust is broken into various chunks called “plates” These plates do not stay in one place, this movement is referred to as “Plate.

PANGAEA

Vocabulary Continental drift – theory that earth’s landmasses once formed a single continent then later drifted to their present location. Pangaea – supercontinent that is believed to have existed during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. Pangaea broke apart, forming the seven continents. The continents slowly drifted to their present positions. Plate tectonics – theory that ties the continental drift theory together with the concept of sea floor spreading to explain the motions of the earth’s lithosphere.

Vocabulary Lithosphere- the “solid” part of the Earth. It has two parts, the crust and the upper mantle. 1.The crust (The outermost layer of the Earth) 2.The mantle(Middle layer of the Earth) 3.The core (Inner layers of the Earth) 4.Earth's Continental Plates - ZoomSchool.comEarth's Continental Plates - ZoomSchool.com

Pangea's Formation The idea of Pangaea was invented by Alfred Wegner. He believed that Earth once a long time ago, was all one continent. It was called Pangaea. He believed Earth’s continents fit together like puzzle pieces. A lot of others at the time said it couldn’t work. They said he did not have enough proof. The proof he had was fossils from different countries. For example, one fossil he found, was in South America and Africa. Another proof was he had made the continents fit into little pieces, and they looked like a continent. He named it Pangaea, and it soon broke apart and turned into present day, North America, South America, Africa, Australia Antarctica, Europe, and Asia.
