Can Opener Estimated Time for Completion: 20 minutes Experience Level: Higher MSC.Marc 2005r2 MSC.Patran 2005r2

2 Topics Covered 2D thin shell elements Material field using tabular input Elastic-plastic material model using material field Deformable contact Modifying contact table for glue and touch Setting contact separation criterion in contact parameters Multiple-step analysis Large displacement / Large strains Adaptive increments

3 Problem Description This example demonstrates the modeling and analysis of the opening of an aluminum container. The analysis is simplified not to simulate the effects of internal pressure - although it can be extended to that effect - and the cracking of the opening is simulated by way of controlling separation in contact with a stress limit. The container is of the sort commonly used to sell individual servings of soft drinking opened by pulling from a tab.

4 Summary of Model Analysis Type: Statics Large displacements / Small strains Analysis consists of 2 steps: pull step push step Deformable contact on cover Deformable contact on pin Deformable contact on ring Fixed displacement on cover Displacement push on ring during the second step Displacement pull on ring during the first step Material: Elastic-plastic model using material field Glued contact between cover and pin, specified in contact table in solution parameters
