ATLAS in Textbooks for Schools ERIK JOHANSSON STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY IPPOG PARIS APRIL 2015

H EUREKA Is one of the most widely used physics textbooks in Sweden for year olds (high school/gymnasium). We are two university professors contributing with: Particle Physics Astroparticle Physics A glimpse of Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics ATLAS images The Higgs particle and other collision events The LHC The ATLAS detector 2 Erik JohanssonStockholm University

S OME ATLAS IMAGES IN H EUREKA 3

H EUREKA GOES DIGITAL P ARTICE P HYSICS : F OCUS ON THE PRODUCTION OF THE H IGGS PARTICLE ( AND THE N OBEL PRIZE ) A REAL H IGGS EVENT HTTP :// WWW. ATLAS. CH / MULTIMEDIA /2- PHOTON - EVENT. HTML A NIMATIONS OF H IGGS PRODUCTION VIA GLUON FUSION T HE QUARK - GLUON ANIMATIONS CAN ALSO BE FOUND AT S TOCKHOLM U NIVERSITY Erik JohanssonStockholm University

F UTURE E DITIONS Visualisation of the Standard Model particles by showing the production and decay of a top/antitop pair – a rather complicated sequence Practically all Standard Model particles are present quark 5 Erik Johansson Stockholm University

C ONCLUSIONS The great thing with textbooks is that they are read by many students year after year The animations and films of ATLAS and LHC are well suited for digital textbooks Digital textbooks make physics at school more interesting Heureka is now crossing Öresund, i e entering Denmark 6 Erik JohanssonStockholm University
