HOOK Strategies (choose one) Lively Description – Imagery Funnel Quotation Turnabout

Lively Description - Imagery Use sensory details and figurative language to add interest to an introduction. Paint a picture and establish the mood of the essay.

Lively Description – Imagery In August 1883, Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia erupted. It was a big eruption, and many people died as a result. It had been rumbling and smoking for months, but no one expected such a violent explosion. Then, on August 27 and 28, 1883, a thunderous eruption blew the island apart and took the lives of more than 36,000 people. The eruption of Krakatoa, a volcanic island in Indonesia, was one of the most violent natural events ever witnessed by humans.

Funnel Reveals background information leading to a focused thesis statement. Example: Birds, horses, rats and other animals all have special talents which have been used by humans. However, no animal has quite as many special talents as dogs.

Quotation Uses a quote to lead to the thesis statement Can lead impact and lend authority Example: “Never trust a man a dog doesn’t like,” the proverb says. This somehow implies that dogs can tell the character of a person before a human can. In many ways this is true.

Turnabout Starts with the opposite idea and then moves to the focus Example: Dogs are cute, smart, and loyal. However, dogs can have annoying habits.

A Thesis Statement contains the main idea or message of a composition. is usually one sentence is a statement, not a question identifies the subject of the essay or composition takes a stand rather than simply announcing a subject is narrow and specific enough to be fully supported
