Podcast web-based audio broadcast may include images but may only have audio

Podcasting in Plain English follow this link to view a short Common Craft video explaining Podcasting Podcasting in Plain English

Find Podcasts The following are sites that have educational podcasts some will be useful for you as a learner and some may be useful in your classroom iTunes U from this link, scroll approximately halfway down the page until you see this and click on the link to watch the video

Find Podcasts These are additional sites that have educational podcasts some are better organized and have more applicable content than others so be a critical consumer Apple Learning Interchange look in the box on the right hand side for resources high school student podcasts Education Podcast Network (EPN) Podcast AlleyPodcast Alley - has an education section

Why Podcast? Teacher Made Ideas Reinforce difficult concepts Record classroom texts Record instructions to access from home Curriculum review Support struggling readers

Why Podcast? Student Made Ideas Student Made Reader’s Theater Reading fluency Interviews and Discussions Poetry, speeches Practice dialogues Small group music ensembles Alternative to “writing” a report Interview a book character Explain a math or science concept

Watch and listen to some student-made podcasts Go to the Apple Learning Interchange (ALI)Apple Learning Interchange in the box on the right, chose the level you’d like to view you don’t need to watch the entire podcast, just enough to get an idea of what students are doing click here for a Eugene elementary school examplehere

Preproduction As in writing, there is a process to follow when creating a podcast Be sure to consider the PURPOSE of the podcast is it to teach, review, entertain? Who is the AUDIENCE? younger students, people who already know a lot about this topic, people who are just learning? How LONG should it be? generally speaking, unless it’s an entire lecture, 5-10 minutes works well Who will do each piece? you could have the writer/editor, recorder, sound effects have students take turns at the various roles Practice - a lot! The more you practice, the better your product will be.

Production When you’re ready to record (after all that practicing!) you have some options. You could use: built-in microphone - many computers have these headsets with microphones - cost about $50 and help to cut down on background noise GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity (PC) - these 2 software applications let you record and share your podcast record short portions at a time - that way, it’s easier to find mistakes and fix them

Postproduction At this point, you want to make sure that everything is in order and ready to share edit - check for audio that shouldn’t be included make sure images line up with audio arrange clips correctly - rearrange, if necessary, to be sure everything is in the correct order trim clips - if they’re too long and be sure there are no dead spots add music and sound effects - when working with students, it’s important to leave this to the end! Content comes first. publish or share in some way

Publish There are a variety of ways to publish, or share, your product. You could: Save it to a jump drive Send it as an attachment Burn to a CD or DVD Export (share) to iTunes Export to a school web site, blog or wiki Here’s an example of a classroom website including student podcasts: Awbrey ParkAwbrey Park

Create Audacity is a program you can use to record a podcast on a PC free download at: audacity tutorials- please watch either, of both, of these tutorials and follow the steps to create your own podcast How to Create a Podcast (there are a few personal references to his friend Melissa but the tutorial is helpful!)Create a Podcast
